When most people think of travel in Brazil they imagine hundreds of beautiful samba dancers in dental floss bikinis shaking their stuff on the beach. The trouble with dispelling such erotic fantasies as these is that the image of loose sexuality in Brazil is fairly true.

For the average Brazilian to go out and kiss someone in a bar is no big deal at all. Most of them will sleep with someone and refer to as a coisinha, a 'little thing'. The body rules supreme in Brazil and they are very at ease in their sexuality. In times of Carnival, especially, no one is supposed to belong to anyone else and sex is just part of having a good time.

But that's not to say that if you got to Brazil you'll get laid every night. Any fairly attractive woman heading to Brazil will be able to find a partner simply by standing around a bar - Brazilian guys are not shy and will soon arrive at your side and try to put their hands around you.

For the guys things are a little different. The first thing is to learn how to tell the prostitutes apart from the other girls. Prostitutes in Brazil, like in other sex zones of the world, are ostentatiously dressed with too much make up and an overly flirtatious style. They may have a predatory look in the eyes and are mostly poor unfortunates trying to make a buck or else shameless con artists looking to rob you blind.

There are plenty of Brazilian girls who would love a romance with a Westerner but if you don't speak the language you'll be limited to those who have had enough education and opportunity to speak English. Learning Portuguese is about the best thing you can do for your sex life in Brazil and you'll have a lot more fun too.

On the other hand, there are plenty of gringo-hunters also who speak English are are more interested in your passport than anything else.

Even when you meet girls expect them to forget you as fast as they met you. No one really believes in tomorrow in Brazil. If you do manage to get a girlfriend for real, expect her to be utterly possessive and jealous. They learn their melodramatic love politics from watching the interminable telenovelas on TV where the main stars are always freaking out on each other.
